If You Have a Sensitive Scalp, It’s Time to Switch to These (Actually) Gentle Shampoos

We tend to think of the scalp as an integral part of our hair, but it’s actually skin —just like you know, the skin on your face. With that being said, if you have sensitive skin on your face and body, it’s fairly likely that your scalp is also prone to irritation, inflammation, flakiness and itchiness, making the hunt to find the best shampoo for sensitive scalps a top skincare priority. If you’re skin falls on the highly reactive end of the spectrum, you’re probably already aware that using harsher actives like Vitamin C and retinoids can cause some major flare-ups and discomfort, and the same is true when it comes to the stuff you put on your head.

Shampoos are notoriously laden with irritating chemicals and additives that wreak havoc on a delicate scalp. From the violet-pigmented dyes in your purple shampoo, to the delicious, perfume-replacing fragrances in your daily hair wash, and even nasty additive like sulfates and parabens, these scalp no-no’s all happen to be common culprits linked with causing major scalp issues. As if these commonplace, impossible-to-pronounce shampoo ingredients weren’t troubling enough, you may be surprised to learn that some popular shampoos are infused with alcohol and, wait for it — even formaldehyde. Yikes, indeed.

There are endless shampoos on the market labeled with beauty buzzwords like “gentle,” and “moisturizing,” but often times, these formulas are still chock full of troublesome additives that won’t help you combat dandruff or irritation in the slightest. Natural shampoos –often infused with tea tree and other essentials oils can be a great place to start, but you’ll still want to do your research when it comes to reading the finely printed ingredient list on the back. If you’re clueless with where to start in your search, we’ve rounded up a few safe options for sensitive skin and irritated scalps that will still give your locks a good deep clean.

What Happens When You Get Drunk, According to Your Zodiac Sign

There’s nothing like alcohol to get grown adults to suddenly act like their best/worst 5 year old selves.  Since alcohol just strips us of our good upbringing, it typically brings out our traits in really interesting (read: strange and probably not 100 percent safe) ways. Your zodiac sign’s drunk personality is no exception.

Personally, I do this super cute thing that my friends love where I hide my purse and then immediately forget where it is. I usually spend the rest of the night panicking and looking for it, forsaking all social interactions and definitely reaffirming that I am the weakest link. If I can’t find my bag quick enough (read: in 10 minutes), I accuse my dearest friends of losing it or taking it. So charming, right? WRONG. It’s terrible, and I have since rectified my known issue by not using a purse, and losing my ID and keys and chapstick over the course of the entire night—because I am open to change and growth, OK? The thing with drinking—you just gotta know your strengths. (And drink lots of water.)

But I digress.

Each sign is its own maelstrom of fun and personality. From signs that wanna get weird to those who feel the urgent need to cook something—we all bring something to the proverbial table. I always think it’s interesting, seeing how people act and connect when they aren’t all buttoned-up and focused on being their own personal representative. The ‘chill ones’ always get a little more neurotic, and the quiet ones usually end up being so funny I laugh until my ribs hurt. People are wonderfully surprising. Also, I like the way everyone gets all smudgey and then compliments each other in the bathroom. (Do guys do this, too? I hope so. It’s so wholesome.)

So what happens when you drink something a little scandalous? Do you have fun, or get weird and shamey? No judgement. Just something to think about.

Does this sound like you? Of course not. You’re perfect and dreamy and you don’t drink alcohol. But if you did…here’s your sign’s drunken alter ego.

 Aries – The Daredevil

Aries loves doing crazy, weird shit when they’ve imbibed enough of the devil’s juice. They’re always the one willing to take whatever game or event to the next level. Fun and unpredictable, Aries are really good at getting people to follow their lead. They’re the friend that needs to be ‘bodyguarded’—aka, flanked on both sides by people with brute strength who can make sure Aries doesn’t decide to dive off the side of a rooftop bar or something equally alarming.

Taurus – The Energizer Bunny

This is the friend that you have to forcibly remove from the dance floor after last call. Makeup smeared and indignant, they usually have some words to say about it all. Like, “but I just want to DANCE” and “why are you being so mean to me?” Taurus has the best dance moves, and their hair actually seems to hold up where everyone else looks like a sweaty butthole by the end of the night. They also wear the best shoes.

Gemini – The One Who Gets Lost

Gemini is always buzzing with energy and wayyy too many ideas of questionable sanity—and alcohol only amplifies it. Gemini is the friend who goes off to get drinks and/or mozzarella sticks and then gets lost for two hours. Doesn’t matter who you call, or where you look—they’re gone. It’s like they have some crazy portal they go to that spits them back out just when you’re getting ready to file a missing persons report. Gemini’s just disappear, and show up two hours later with absolutely zero recollection of where they’ve been. And when they return, there is always something wrong with their phone. You can take that to the bank.

Cancer – The Gourmet Chef

Regardless of your proximity to Taco Bell or any other Fine Dining Establishment, Cancer always wants to cook some ridiculously over-the-top meal whenever they get wacky. They’re the ones who inevitably end up burning their arms on the stove and get emotional about it. The only thing you can do is hide all of the knives and try your best to convince Cancer that they don’t need to make crème brûlée from scratch. They are always out of pancake mix or syrup, and their drunk-quesadillas are the best things you’ll taste all year.

Leo – The Philosopher

Ahh, yes. Leo’s love a good, rousing conversation, and when drunk, they’re down to clown. By which I mean talk to you ad nauseum about Big, Abstract Ideas that don’t always connect. I can always tell when I’m talking to a Leo because my eyebrows furrow as I attempt to figure out what the hell is happening. Leo is smart, and even drunk, they’re articulate and profound. Pro-tip: When trapped in a monologue about the concept of time, try to steer towards non-verbal cues like staring at the door or deeply into the bottom of your drink until you can make your escape.

Virgo – The Free Petsitter

Dependable Virgo is one of the easier signs to contend with when plastered. Typically, they want to get settled in a nice corner of an air-conditioned house and pay attention to all the pets. They’re the one covertly snapping pictures of your dog while murmuring encouragements like, “wow, you’re so friendly.” If pets aren’t around, Virgo usually sets up shop near the snack table and stay there. They’re amazing DD’s, and if you make eye contact with them, they’re always good for a friendly conversation. Overall, A+. Love ’em.

Libra – The Overly-Friendly One

Libra goes to the club with one group of friends, and tries to leave with another. They’re the sign that gets drunk and somehow manages to befriend an entire bachelorette party and get invited to the actual wedding two weeks later. It is truly a feat to behold. I recommend a small tracking device (or, Find My Friends) to keep an eye on friendly Libra. I’ve had to pull a few of them out of Ubers as they attempt to leave with strangers. Try dressing them in bright clothing to keep an eye on them, and dress to impress. Who knows? You might get a wedding invite, too.

08 scorpio ciara What Happens When You Get Drunk, According to Your Zodiac Sign

Scorpio – The One Who Loses Their Phone Privileges

Scorpio is always a good time until midnight—not unlike Cinderella. Only instead of losing their shoe, Scorpio reaches their Full Drunk State by wanting to text their exes and every shitty person who has ever wronged them. As Scorpio’s friend, it is your civic duty to confiscate their phone and make sure that they don’t hate themselves in the morning. Best methods depend on the individuals—some need tough love (dude, no. I’m not giving you your phone because you’ll ruin your life and I’m busy tomorrow, OK?) and some need a more tender touch (you deserve so much better! He left you in the desert for three days without water—rude! Let’s talk to someone who doesn’t make you feel subhuman after every interaction….).

Sagittarius – The Mover and Shaker

For some reason, when drunk, Sagittarius wants to change venues every two hours for absolutely no reason. This can be good—getting you to leave wimpy parties or sweaty clubs early without being a total killjoy—but it can also be: super! annoying! Not sure what makes Sagittarius turn all Aragon (not all those who wander are lost, etc.), but all you can do is set a firm limit on second and third locations and stay strong. Remember: they’re your ace in-a-hole when you want to leave—and generous, so at least they pay for the parade of Ubers.

Capricorn – The Human Golden Retriever

Two of my closest friends are Capricorns in the traditional sense—hot and ruthless, whip-smart and intimidating. And then you get them drunk and WHAM. Idk what turns Capricorn’s into soft cuddly puppies when drunk, but it’s so cute and charming that I don’t want to know. Leave it a mystery! Capricorns are the smiley ones making new friends and closing their eyes on the dance floor as they flail. They’re their own softest selves, and always down to get veggie burgers after. They are Extremely Precious.

Aquarius – The Wildcard

Aquarius will surprise you when they’re drunk—like wanting to go swimming in the middle of winter. Or starting a mini-revolution in the girls bathroom. Or, just getting really passionate about whatever they’re talking about. As a water sign, their fluidity means you’ll never know what to expect—but it’s usually fun and harmless. Aquarius wants a good time and snacks. And really, what else do you need?

12 pisces jessica What Happens When You Get Drunk, According to Your Zodiac Sign

Image: Getty Images. Design: Marites Algones/SheKnows.

Pisces – Sleeping Beauty

Doesn’t matter if its 9 pm on a Tuesday afternoon, or 2 am on Saturday night—when intoxicated, Pisces has a good twenty minutes before they completely knock out and fall asleep. I’ve seen this happen at karate studios, dance floors, various couches, on hardwood floors—and once, in a red dancers cage in a sad bar overlooking the Santa Monica mountains. Pisces is committed to beauty rest, and is a sound sleeper. Super low maintenance, and a great way to corral all your stuff in one place (as a pillow, obviously. I’m not a monster.) DO NOT FORGET THEM AT THE BAR. They will never let you forget it.

‘Stranger Things’ Youngest Cast Member Might Shock You

We’ve watched them grow up before our eyes, but the ages of the Stranger Things cast are still super shocking. Typically when kids are the focal points of a franchise or TV show, there is a major concern about continuity and aging. Thankfully Stranger Things creators, the Duffer Brothers aren’t really bothered by all of that. Instead, they said they’ll just adjust the series’ narrative if things go too far left as far as the kiddos get older. Ross Duffer told The Hollywood Reporter,

It’s better to adjust the narrative to fit the ages than to try to rush the process. They grow so fast, we would have to move at such a speed to keep them young. Even over the course of these nine episodes, you can see them getting older. That’s something that plays over a week. We want to move as fast as we can, but it’s not really dictated by the kids.

Season 3 of Stranger Things, which leads us back to Hawkins, Indiana during a blistering hot summer in the mid-1980s will begin to explore a little more than just The Upside Down and its various creatures and monsters. Season 3 will also explore the idea of change and what that means as our favs continue to grow and age. However, don’t expect the entire Stranger Things casts’ real life edges to line up with the middle school age kiddos that they play.

You might be shocked to know that some of the gang are damn near adults.

Caleb McLaughlin-Lucas Sinclair

We’ve adored Caleb McLaughlin since he played young Rickey Bell in BET’s The New Edition Story. But don’t let his baby face fool you. McLaughlin will turn 18 on Oct. 13, 2019, making him slightly older than the rest of the ST cast. McLaughlin has a long history of storytelling. He played Young Simba on Broadway’s The Lion King, but after snagging a small role on Law & Order: Special Victims Unit opposite our president Olivia Benson. That’s when McLaughlin knew he wanted to be in front of the camera.

Since the oldest ST cast member can play everything from a middle school kid to a high schooler, McLaughlin’s options for film and TV roles outside of Stranger Things are endless.

Sadie Sink- Max Mayfield

17-year-old Sadie Sink first got her start in acting in 2012’s Annie revival on Broadway. Like McLaughlin, she got the TV bug after snagging two small roles, one in The Americans and another on Blue Bloods. Though she’s the second oldest Stranger Things cast member, she is also the new girl who didn’t arrive in Hawkins until Season 2.

Luckily, the body positivity advocate fit right in with the crew and is super tight with Millie Bobby Brown who plays Eleven on the show. The girls have been spotted vacationing together, and they even have sleepovers while they’re filming.

Instagram PhotoSource: Instagram

Gaten Matarazzo- Dustin Henderson

Out of everyone on Stranger Things, Gaten Matarazzo’s character Dustin Henderson has probably changed the most since Season 1 of the series. Between the freshman and sophomore seasons, we noticed Matarazzo’s voice change drastically–lowering a few octaves. Luckily the 16-year-old Broadway star hasn’t let that stop his shine.

All of this change actually works pretty well with his character since Matarazzo thinks that he and Dustin have pretty similar personalities.

Instagram PhotoSource: Instagram

Finn Wolfhard-Mike Wheeler

Before snagging the role of Mike Wheeler on Stranger Things, you probably recognized Finn Wolfhard from The CW’s The 100 or Supernatural. The 16-year-old has been acting for many years, and he’s going to be super busy in the coming months. He will appear in the next Ghostbusters movie and the highly anticipated, IT: Chapter Two.

Acting isn’t the only thing Wolfhard is passionate about. When he’s not stunting in Mike’s bowl cut he plays guitar and sings in a band named Calpurnia. They already have an EP.

Instagram PhotoSource: Instagram

Millie Bobby Brown-Eleven

Out of everyone, Millie Bobby Brown is probably the breakout member of the Stranger Things cast. At just 15-years old, that’s a ton of weight and responsibility on her shoulders. However, Brown has taken it all in stride. She was the youngest person ever to be named one of Time Magazine’s 100 most influential people.

In addition to using her social media platforms to advocate for causes close to her heart, Brown’s film career is also taking off. She just starred in Godzilla: King of the Monsters and she’s slated to be in 2020’s Godzilla vs. Kong along with several other enticing projects.

Instagram PhotoSource: Instagram

Noah Schnapp-Will Byers

At 14, Noah Schnapp is the baby of the Stranger Things cast. Since he spent a good chunk of the first two seasons withdrawn and subdued, we think his youth was on his side. In addition to being the youngest, Schnapp also had the least experience before snagging his ST role.

It’s clear that Schnapp’s incredibly talented. The fact that he can force his emotions to turn on the flash as Will makes us super eager to see how good he will get as he continues acting.

Being Transgender on Dating Apps: I Deleted my Dating Apps for Months, and This Is What I Learned

I downloaded my first dating app in 2012, during my first year of college, before I even had an iPhone or Instagram. A friend of mine had shown me an app, then called “Badoo,” and I matched with someone I dated casually for a few months. That summer, I had sexual reassignment surgery, and was excited to start dating and using dating apps as a transgender woman with my new body going into sophomore year. Tinder was the first big app everyone had around me. I used it quite frequently with my friends to get free food or to see who in our classes was using the app too. At the time it was a social game of “who’s hot and not” or “who secretly wants who.” As dating apps evolved and grew more common, they became my best friend and a way of validating my beauty as a woman. After college graduation and that entire year before coming out publicly in June of 2016, I dated a lot, and half—if not most—of my dates I had matched with were from apps like Bumble, Hinge, The League, and Raya. At the time, finding a potential partner seemed fairly easy. But now, not so much.

In January of this year I decided to give up all my dating apps due to my growing frustration with how I was being treated on them. As a twenty-something you might wonder why I’d want to alienate myself from a sea of single people. Dating is hard, but as an openly transgender woman, dating apps unfortunately have made it more difficult for me to have a successful relationship. I started to notice a pattern amongst the men I was matching with over the past three years.

The five most common happenings with men once they discover I’m trans are this:

1. I get unmatched or blocked immediately.

Even if a conversation hasn’t started yet, or during us getting to know one another. I always assume they either look me up on the internet or find my Instagram account. I noticed that over time I became more and more numb to this happening, but nonetheless, it didn’t make me feel good and always made my heart drop into my stomach, even for the quickest moment.

2. They stop responding in the middle of a conversation.

This hurts, but a bit less because sometimes people just stop replying because they’ve found someone their more interested in, or delete the app, but I almost always feel it’s because I’m trans and they’ve found out. No matter how great the conversation is, being trans seems to be an issue for most men on these apps.

3. Stopping our conversation to bring up that I’m trans.

These men usually express that they wish I had put “transgender” in my bio as a warning sign to them. Some of them berate me with questions about my story, some do so in a more respectful manner, but typically they subconsciously (or consciously) blame me for being attracted to and talking with a beautiful transwoman. Which leads me to the next thing that usually happens:

4. “You’re pretty, but…”

He asks if I’m transgender and upon reading “Yes” they say, “You’re pretty, but…” Usually what follows is “This won’t work for me” or “I’m not into trans girls” or “I didn’t realize you were trans.” And although trying to be respectful, they never end up wanting to go out. I usually go into an entire spiel about my transition and how if they’d met me in person and seen me for me, they wouldn’t care. But it almost never changes their perceptions or fears of dating a trans woman.

5. Sometimes it works out (kind of)

There have been very few instances where men have not “found out” before our date, or just not cared at all when they do, and on a rare occasion have met up with me in person. But alas, I’m still single.

I see these experiences as my weeding out process. I don’t want to spend my time dating or even talking to anyone who isn’t open minded and comfortable with themselves. Maybe they just don’t understand what transgender really is, but I’ve found that their attraction towards me is a hit to their sensitive male egos. They question what it “means for them,” Does it make them gay? The answer: No, it doesn’t. Often it’s their fear of what their friends and family would think about them, and I can’t help with that. It’s not my job to help the people they surround themselves with to become more supportive human beings.

After deleting all of the dating apps I had profiles on, this is what I’ve learned:

I feel incredible, have a truer sense of self, and I have way more time to myself. I don’t feel crazy or lazy for mindlessly swiping through people and judging them based on photos and a mini bio. When I get bored, it leaves fewer apps to waste time on while waiting for something amazing to happen. Deleting these apps has actually given me more hope in finding something organically—which I have done these past few months, but nothing worthwhile has come from it. It’s also led me to wanting a relationship less, being able to fully enjoying being single, and learn about myself through alone time

To put it simply, it sucks that I have to go through this, yes, but it makes me stronger and more hopeful and appreciative of the man who will steal my heart away. I hope our society can move past this discriminating time in our lives and see transwomen as women.

Millie Bobby Brown Wore Silver Rings in Her Hair and I’m Obsessed

Millie Bobby Brown is having a really great week. The 15-year-old (yes, seriously) has been on a promotional tour for the upcoming season three premiere of her hit show Stranger Things. Last night, she hit up the Louis Vuitton X launch party in Beverly Hills, California with super-cool silver rings in her hair, proving she’s a serious style star who deserves to be there. She posed alongside celebrities including Hailee Steinfeld, Alicia Vikander and Nina Dobrev.

Brown wore head-to-toe Louis Vuitton, of course. The ’80s-inspired outfit included a bright pink bubble skirt, cropped leather jacket, patterned top and tiny white bag. Her makeup, courtesy of Kelsey Deenihan, featured a bold cat eye and nude lips. But it was her hair that really caused everyone’s jaw to drop. The star usually wears more princess-inspired looks but this was all badass.

Hairstylist Bridget Brager gave Brown a sleek updo and added three chunky silver rings to the top of her head.

The unique hairstyle caused Brown’s fans to go crazy, commenting: “Oh my gosh, you look so gorgeous” and “always serving looks.” It’s not like hair rings are new in any way, especially in braids, but the way Brager added them ultra-tight make them look a little futuristic.

Friday night is the big Stranger Things Season 3 premiere in Los Angeles and there’s no telling what Brown will show up looking like. The teen always keeps us guessing. Will she go edgy for the series’ dark vibes as of late, or will she pull out all the Hollywood star glam? We’ll just have to wait and see.

Alaina, 26 — Animal Shelter Date

“One night, my partner asked me if I wanted to go on a date to the animal shelter. We hadn’t planned this in advance. We’d just moved into our first apartment together earlier that week after several years of dating. We looked it up, and the animal shelter in our new city was open. So we went! We fell in love with a bonded pair of two-year-old cats. We talked about it after we left and decided we wanted to adopt them, so we went back later that week to pick them up. We have had Blue and Gansey for almost four years now and that was one of my favorite dates because it brought us our cats, who are seriously so loved.”

Cheyenne, 28 — Camping Mishap Turned Romance

“We had plans to go camping for Fourth of July a few years ago because both of us were dying to get away from the city and just be in the outdoors without anyone else around. We had planned it for weeks and were so excited, but the day before he unexpectedly got called into work and his only options were to A: show up or B: be fired. We were sooo bummed that our weeks of planning were just thrown out the window because of some error on his boss’s end. But at that point we didn’t really have a choice so we chalked it up to an ‘it is what it is’ situation and just went about our week: him going off to work on the Fourth and me at home throwing a pity party. When he asked me to come over later that day I was hesitant because I was pretty bummed, and since our relationship was fairly new, I didn’t want him to be able to see that emotion in person. When I got to his house, he brought me to his deck where he surprised me with his city version of camping under the stars. He put up a tent, brought out an air mattress and made it super cozy inside, then added a finishing touch of sunflowers (my favorite!) in and around the tent. He even brought out his camping grill and had an entire “campfire dinner” planned – of course there was beer too!”

Kathryn, 26 — Snow-Covered Love

“When my now-husband and I first started dating, we went to college in the very cold, yet beautifully snowy Upper Peninsula of Michigan. Our most memorable date was a beautiful nighttime walk on a trail that wound through a snow-covered forest. The snow was falling in big, puffy flakes and sticking to the each and every branch of the trees. Every time there was a break in the trees, we could look up and see millions of stars. We just walked and talked for an hour or two as we trudged through the snow together holding hands. You can’t put a price tag on something as beautiful as that! That date happened when we were 18. We were just kids, and yet it was the start of something truly magical as we have been happily married for 4 years now! It felt like something pulled from the pages of a romance novel.”

Ariel, 24 — Peaceful Nature Moment

“One of my most memorable “dates” (if you can call it one) was with my now-boyfriend, who is the wild adventurer type and always wants to try new outdoor activities. When we were in Arizona, we found a dirt road in the mountains and decided to see where it lead. He took me on his motorcycle, and we went up the mountain, through a river and between trees until we found a beautiful clearing with no other souls around. It was by the river on a lovely sunny day, so we laid down in the sun and listened to the water flow and watched birds up ahead. It was a perfectly peaceful moment — nothing else mattered in the world. We shared childhood memories, observed the outdoors and talked about the simple joy of life, like this moment. After sunbathing here for a long time and maybe falling asleep, we went to a high rock and meditated, soaking up more sun and feeling nature’s energy sink in. There was no money involved in this date and it was the best one I’ve ever had!”

Nick, 27 — Candles & Conversation

“We drove about 15 minutes outside of the city through trees and fields to get to a restaurant that used to be a farm house. The table we got was in the back and very private. We had the most amazing candle lit dinner. There was good conversation the whole time, even on the car ride home. We took a minute to stare at the moon and the stars and that was it.”

Maddy, 24 — Fireflies Fluttering

“One time in high school my then-boyfriend took me to this huge field in the middle of nowhere that lit up with a WILD amount of fireflies at night. He knew I liked seeing one or two fireflies so the thoughtfulness and how beautiful it was was amazing!”

Amy, 26 — Christmas Lights Abound

“When my partner and I first started dating (early December), we spent one night going to get Starbucks hot chocolate and driving around looking at all the Christmas lights and talking. It’s still one of my favorite dates we’ve ever been on.”

Stephen, 25 — It’s the Little Things

“Very recently, a girl and I met up at the National Harbor in Maryland. It was our first date but we just said let’s wing it. We got Colombian food and walked around the pier before going to a wine paint bar where we could drink while taking a Bob Ross-like painting class. Afterwards I drove her back to her car and she had a deflated tire. I taught her how to pump her tires but she had a puncture anyway. She was stuck so she came to my place, put on some of my sweats and we just had a nice night of smoking weed and held hands until we fell asleep.”

Liam, 25 — Desserts-Only Picnic

“I took my high school girlfriend on a candlelit picnic to this place in Austin called Mt. Bonnell. It’s a super scenic lookout. Surprisingly there was no one else there. We had gone out to dinner before so it was more of a dessert picnic (hot chocolate in a thermos and brownies). I think it helped the romance of it because the whole date was a surprise for her and she hadn’t been there before.”

Rebecca, 25 — Scavenger Hunt

“I brought my high school boyfriend horseback riding for our 2nd year anniversary and then we got back to my house and I had planned a scavenger hunt that ended in a “picnic” in my basement with Chinese food.”

Nicole, 43 — Cooking Competition

“We each made a burger at home and had a fun inexpensive competition. Basically we went shopping together and grilled at my place. It was super fun and super inexpensive and I won too (I put stuffed blue cheese olives in my burger)!”

Lindsey, 25 — Keeping Up with the Interests

“We went to a fancy sushi restaurant and then post-gamed at his place with a quick chat about data analytics and a lot of Keeping Up with the Kardashians. Not everyone’s idea of romance, but he’d taken care to incorporate so many of my favorite things into our first date together that my panties basically hit the floor the moment KUWTK ended. (Not before. Gotta finish the episode.)”

Nick, 27 — Furniture Store

“One time I went on a date at a furniture store. We just sat and laid on all kinds of different furniture and had great memories and comfy conversation the whole time.”

Janet, 24 — Bar Hopping & Museum Kissing

“I once went on a first date where we went to three bars in one night and kissed on the steps of the Brooklyn museum. It felt like a dream — not particularly because of the activities we did but just because there was a really great connection between us.”

Alaina, 26 — Do I Know You?

“My fiancee and I decided to pretend we were going on a first date a couple of years ago. So we pretended we’d never met and did things like ask getting-to-know-you questions, hold the door open for each other, and try to see when the best time was for a “first” kiss. It was really different and sweet.”

Lia, 24 — Steal Kisses, Not Art

“We went to an art museum and stole kisses in the rooms that were empty and then had dinner in a restaurant that overlooked the city.”

Cathy, 53 — Gettin’ Fancy

“Dinner on Valentines Day at a local restaurant that was ‘too swanky’ for my parents to take us to as children. It was special because it was probably the first *NICE* restaurant I’d been to and also that we had both been too busy to make plans and he pulled it off at the last minute against all odds.”

Maddy, 24 — Permanent Love

“I got matching tattoos with a dude from a dating app as a first date (both of us already have several tattoos so it was no big deal to us).”

Sherry, 55 — Italy Isn’t So Far After All

“My beau and I are always taking about how much we’d love to go to Italy together to ride a Vespa and drift through Venice on a gondola. One time we were going out to dinner at a restaurant in Jack London Square, in Oakland. We had a wonderful dinner together and then hopped back on his motorcycle to head home. He yelled back to me and asked if I would be okay if we stopped by Lake Merritt to see the lights at night. Sure thing.  He pointed to something on the lake and said, “Hey, what’s that … let’s go check it out.” When we got closer, I saw that it was a beautiful, gleaming GONDOLA! Ian said, “Shall we go for a ride? “ I didn’t know it at the time, but there are actual Italian gondolas that people can rent out and ride around Lake Merritt — in Oakland! Ian had reserved the gondola for us and he unpacked his bag, which had a bottle of wine and some chocolate truffles! Our gondola driver sang Italian love songs as we drifted under the moonlight sipping wine and laughing. Holy Toledo, was that a romantic and beautiful evening! The love was multi-layered: that he had planned a surprise, that he had discovered a way to bring Italy to us, that he brought the wine and chocolates, that he was so charming and handsome all night, etc!”

Nicole, 28 — Twinkling Lights Do It Every Time

“There was a restaurant in Wilmington, NC that is now closed where each table had its own private balcony overlooking the sound. I went there on a date one evening after dark, and there are a lot of twinkling lights in it was just a beautiful place.”

Joshua, 22 — I Choose You, Pikachu

“I brought over Pokemon games and we played and got drunk off cheap drug store wine.”

Sarah, 24 — This Club Is Jumpin’

“One time I told my boyfriend we were going on a date but didn’t tell him where. I drove for about 30 minutes and he tried to figure out where we were going the entire time. We ate dinner and then went to a trampoline park. Somehow we were the only ones in the entire place, which was so great.”

Toby Hopper, 67 — Just Don’t Look Down

“The night my husband proposed to me. It was in St. Louis Missouri and the top floor of a hotel was a revolving restaurant. We were dressed up, the meal was amazing, and when he asked me to marry him it seemed like my life was complete!”

Jeannie, 25 — Watch Out Below

“One of the best dates I’ve been on was hitting golf balls off a mountain (we had hung out before so safety wasn’t an immediate issue). We drove up and he didn’t tell me what we were doing, just to dress warmly. When he told me what we were doing, it sounded pretty stupid. However, once we started doing it, I found it very therapeutic. There was no concern for what would happen once we left, just us laughing and talking while channeling some rage. I also got some ‘lessons,’ and who is going to complain about that?”

Shanon, 42 — Music to My Ears

“I was dating a music professor. He planned our last date before I was scheduled for surgery and didn’t tell me what we were doing. He picked me up that evening and drove me to the waterfront. We walked by the piers and sat on a bench overlooking the water while he told me how he felt about me in great detail. He had never opened up to me like that before, though I’d already made it clear I was smitten. He drove me to a little jazz club and sat me down at a table. He ordered my favorite drink from the bar, a French Martini, and told me to order anything I wanted from the menu. Then, he stood and said he needed to do something. He walked over to the band that was performing. Turns out he’d arranged to play for me. He’s a trombonist with his own band. He said he knew I was disappointed I wouldn’t be able to attend any of his upcoming shows. I’d never seen him play live. He chose to perform a Billie Holiday song. At one point, he sat down at our table and played his trombone beside me. I tried to keep it together, but I cried like a baby. The entire date was so thoughtful and romantic.”
