I have a bone to pick with anyone who exclusively associates hygge with fall and winter. Because coziness is too delightful a thing to allocate to a mere few months each year. Consider this my campaign to bring summer hygge to the forefront of the zeitgeist—a mission I’m fueling with a bunch of incredibly cute summer sweaters.
I know late July is just about the last time anyone would want to humor the thought of a knit. Humidity and yarn are an absolute match made in hell—a breeding ground for all kinds of moist scratchiness and damp itchiness. (Lol, undoubtedly the most disgusting sentence I’ve ever penned.) The thing is: You wouldn’t be wearing your new, veritably adorable summer sweater outside in the summer humidity! You’d be wearing it inside, where the AC is kept frigid enough to spawn another Ice Age! Or outside on some summer night, after the sun has stopped shining—when the breeze is thoroughly starting to pick up! Star-sprinkled summer skies pair exceptionally well with cool breezes—which (you see where this is going) pair exceptionally well with sweaters. And not just any sweaters—sweaters crafted with the understanding that even when it’s a little chilly out, it’s probably no more than 60 degrees.
Not to mention, as we transition from July to August—and then from August to September, our appetites for autumnal wear will increase, meanwhile, the weather will stay relatively warm. Summer doesn’t officially end until September 23, so we have a great many weeks of heat and humidity ahead of us—weeks where we’ll crave hygge and have nothing in our closets that can deliver it in a weather-appropriate manner. Lest we, you know, stock up on a bunch of summer sweaters now.
